This program development capstone project is a continuing education program for outpatient orthopedic occupational therapists about key concepts in exercise science and strength and conditioning principles. The goal of therapeutic exercise in occupational therapy (OT) is to develop the skills necessary to participate in an occupation, and the type of exercise and dosage prescribed should be tailored to patient goals. Intervention techniques to increase strength, endurance, coordination, and stamina are well-documented in other professions. However, finding literature that supports strengthening as an intervention in OT is difficult to find. This program development capstone program will integrate knowledge from other disciplines and provide outpatient orthopedic occupational therapists with evidence-based reasoning for therapeutic exercise prescription of resistance, repetitions, and frequency as preparatory tasks to increase participation in meaningful occupations.
