Medication errors (MEs) cost billions of dollars annually. These errors can lengthen inpatient stay, decrease healthcare system trust, and ultimately increase morbidity and mortality. Medication administration errors (MAE) remain a global problem even after the introduction of health information technology (HIT), like the barcode medication administration (BCMA) systems. The BCMA can decrease inpatient medication errors when used correctly. However, adaptations, overrides, workarounds, and lack of nursing knowledge still contribute to medication errors. This project aims to increase nursing compliance with the BCMA system in an effort to reduce MEs and improve the confidence level of nurses to troubleshoot problematic medications unable to scan.
